Stroller Facts

Believe it or not, there are some interesting stroller facts out there that may pique your interest. To begin, let’s start with the very first carriage to ever grace city streets.

The first carriage was an invention that was commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire. This duke wanted a way to show off his child to the aristocratic world, but he didn’t want to carry the sniveling baby around on his own – what was a duke to do? Well, this one found a garden architect by the name of William Kent, and asked him to build a type of baby buggy for him. Kent obliged and came up with a basket attached to a frame that was meant to be pulled by a donkey or a goat. Though this is one of the many stroller facts out there, there are many more to be discovered.

Back in the 1800s, carriages were decorated with brass, lots of precious metals, and tons of ornate details. This is precisely why only the aristocratic could afford to show off their infants by pushing them around town. Later, carriages as we know them came to be. Now, let’s talk about some important safety terms that you may want to know prior to purchasing any type of carriage (ornate or otherwise). Let’s begin with the harness. While many people are baffled by the idea of a harness on a child, these safety devices are really quite useful.

A five-point harness refers to one that secures the shoulders and the lap of your child. This way, your child has no chance of escape. A three-point harness acts like a seatbelt, so it doesn’t include the shoulder straps. While both are helpful, the five-point harness is your best bet when it comes to safety. Those carriage that are considered “all terrain” can be thought of in the same manner as a mountain bike – they can go anywhere without any amount of damage. Of course, there is your typical, run of the mill, carriage too, but who would want that considering all the other options out there? Ok, back to those interesting stroller facts.

Did you know that the first jogger was invented by a runner? That’s right, those neat contraptions are actually meant for more than power walking. A runner that simply wanted a way to enjoy his sport and transport his child at the same time came up with the Baby Jogger.

Carriages have come a long way from their royal beginnings, but hardly a parent in the world would be caught without one today. Whether you want to walk, job, travel, or simply push your baby down the sidewalk, there is a carriage out there with your name on it.
